The holder of a Certificate of Service as Master of a Fishing Vessel of less than 60 Gross Tonnage may act as Master of a Fishing Vessel of not more than 60 gross tonnage engaged on an:

1. Unlimited; or
2. Near Coastal, class 1 or 2; or
3. Sheltered Waters Voyage.

The voyage validity will be specified on the Certificate according to the voyages on which the qualifying service for the certificate has been acquired.

The Certificate of Service as Master of a Fishing Vessel of less than 60 Gross Tonnage candidate must:

Acquire at least 12 months of sea service before the date of coming into force (see below), as master of one or more fishing vessels of at least 15 gross tonnage or at least 12 metres in overall length while engaged on voyages that the certificate sought would permit.

The requirement to Hold a Certificate, a Training Certificate or a Declaration of at least seven fishing seasons for the Master and any other Person In Charge of the Deck Watch come into effect on:

1. November 7, 2008 - Vessels with Length Overall of more than 15 metres (49' 02");
2. November 7, 2009 - Vessels with Length Overall of more than 14 metres (45' 11");
3. November 7, 2010 - Vessels with Length Overall of more than 13 metres (42' 08");
4. November 7, 2012 - Vessels with Length Overall of more than 12 metres (39' 04");
5. November 7, 2015 - Vessels with Length Overall of more than 6 metres (19' 08");
6. November 7, 2016 - Vessels of all lengths.

An applicant for the Certificate of Service as Master of a Fishing Vessel of less than 60 Gross Tonnage, must provide the following Certificates to the examiner:

1. Marine Emergency Duties with Respect to Basic Safety (MED A1) Training Certificate;
2. If the vessel is equipped with a VHF radiotelephone installation, an appropriate radio Operator Certificate issued under the Radiocommunication Act, either
   
   1. GMDSS Radio Operator Certificate - Marine Commercial; or
   2. GMDSS General Operator Certificate;

   and

3. If the applicant has not acquired at least seven fishing seasons of experience as Master of one or more Fishing Vessels, with no two of those seasons having occurred in the same year:
   
   1. Simulated Electronic Navigation, Limited Training Certificate;
   2. Marine Basic First Aid Certificate; and
   3. Small Vessel Operator Proficiency License Training Certificate.
