STCW Basic Safety

The Marine Emergency Duties, STCW Basic Safety course meets the requirements of STCW Convention Regulation VI/1 and STCW Code Tables VI/1-1 through VI/1-4, Basic Safety Training for Seafarers and is of 43 hours duration composed of:
  1. Classroom lectures: 21 hours;
  2. Practical firefighting exercises: 16 hours; and
  3. Practical lifesaving, Survival and Rescue exercises: 6 hours.

The Western Maritime Institute Marine Emergency Duties, STCW Basic Safety is a Transport Canada approved training course that will cover the following subject area of study:

  1. Hazards, Emergencies and Pollution Prevention;
  2. Firefighting Theory;
  3. Fire Control Aboard Vessels;
  4. Shipboard Firefighting Organization;
  5. On-board Training and Practical Firefighting;
  6. Use and Care of Firefighting Equipment;
  7. Lifesaving Equipment and Abandonment;
  8. Survival;
  9. Communications;
  10. Rescue;
  11. Safe Working Practices;
  12. Effective Human Relationships on Board Vessels.

STCW Code Table VI/1-3 specifies the minimum standard of competence in elementary first aid is required before the school can issue an STCW Basic Safety Training Certificate.

A Transport Canada Training Certificate will be issued by The Western Maritime Institute to the participant who:

  1. Has been assigned a Candidate Document Number (CDN) by Transport Canada
  2. Holds a Marine Basic First Aid Certificate;
  3. Maintains a minimum of 90% attendance;
  4. Participates in, and successfully performs, the practical exercises; and
  5. Achieves a grade of at least 70% on a 50-multiple choice question test at the conclusion of the course.

NOTE: Practical exercise exemption for medical reasons will be accepted upon receipt of a letter signed by a medical practitioner.
