Advanced Firefighting

The Marine Emergency Duties, Advanced Firefighting Course meets the requirements of STCW Convention Regulation VI/3, Advanced Firefighting and is of 37 hours duration comprised of:
  1. Classroom lectures: 19 hours;
  2. Practical Advanced Firefighting exercises: 18 hours.

The Western Maritime Institute Marine Emergency Duties, Advanced Firefighting Course is a Transport Canada approved training course that will cover the following subject area of study:

  1. Training of Seafarers in Firefighting;
  2. Firefighting Process Hazards;
  3. Ventilation Control, including Smoke Extraction;
  4. Monitoring and Control of Stability during Firefighting;
  5. Response of Bridge, Deck and Engine-Room Watch Officers to Emergencies;
  6. Emergency Response Team Leadership;
  7. On-Scene Leaders’ Plan of Attack;
  8. Co-ordination of Shipboard Firefighting;
  9. Co-ordination with Shore-based Firefighters;
  10. Management and Control of Injured Persons;
  11. Fixed Fire Detection and Extinguishing Facilities;
  12. Inspection and Maintenance of Emergency Equipment;
  13. Incident Recording;
  14. Crowd Management
  15. Search and Rescue
  16. Communications.

A Transport Canada Training Certificate will be issued by The Western Maritime Institute to the participant who:

  1. Has been assigned a Candidate Document Number (CDN) by Transport Canada
  2. Maintains a minimum of 90% attendance;
  3. Participates in, and successfully performs, the practical exercises; and
  4. Achieves a grade of at least 70% on a 50-multiple choice question test at the conclusion of the course.

NOTE: Practical exercise exemption for medical reasons will be accepted upon receipt of a letter signed by a Medical Practitioner.

TRANSPORT CANADA REQUIRES THE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THIS COURSE FOR THE FOLLOWING CERTIFICATES OF COMPETENCY:
  1. Master Mariner;
  2. Master, Near Coastal;
  3. Master 3,000 Gross Tonnage, Near Coastal;
  4. Master 3,000 Gross Tonnage, Domestic;
  5. Master 500 Gross Tonnage, Domestic;
  6. Master 150 Gross Tonnage, Domestic;
  7. Master, Limited for a Vessel of 60 Gross Tonnage or More;
  8. Chief Mate;
  9. Chief Mate, Near Coastal;
  10. Watchkeeping Mate and Watchkeeping Mate, Near Coastal;
  11. Chief Mate 500 Gross Tonnage, Domestic;
  12. Chief Mate 150 Gross Tonnage, Domestic;
  13. Chief Mate, Limited for a Vessel of 60 Gross Tonnage or More;
  14. Fishing Master, First Class;
  15. Fishing Master, Second Class.

Prerequisites: The student must be at least 16-years of age to enroll in this course.
