The Marine Emergency Duties, Advanced Firefighting Course meets the requirements of STCW Convention Regulation VI/3, Advanced Firefighting and is of 37 hours duration comprised of:
The Western Maritime Institute Marine Emergency Duties, Advanced Firefighting Course is a Transport Canada approved training course that will cover the following subject area of study:
Training of Seafarers in Firefighting;
Firefighting Process Hazards;
Ventilation Control, including Smoke Extraction;
Monitoring and Control of Stability during Firefighting;
Response of Bridge, Deck and Engine-Room Watch Officers to Emergencies;
Emergency Response Team Leadership;
On-Scene Leaders’ Plan of Attack;
Co-ordination of Shipboard Firefighting;
Co-ordination with Shore-based Firefighters;
Management and Control of Injured Persons;
Fixed Fire Detection and Extinguishing Facilities;
Inspection and Maintenance of Emergency Equipment;
Incident Recording;
Crowd Management
Search and Rescue
Communications.
A Transport Canada Training Certificate will be issued by The Western Maritime Institute to the participant who:
Has been assigned a Candidate Document Number (CDN) by Transport Canada
Maintains a minimum of 90% attendance;
Participates in, and successfully performs, the practical exercises; and
Achieves a grade of at least 70% on a 50-multiple choice question test at the conclusion of the course.
NOTE: Practical exercise exemption for medical reasons will be accepted upon receipt of a letter signed by a Medical Practitioner.
TRANSPORT CANADA REQUIRES THE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THIS COURSE FOR THE FOLLOWING CERTIFICATES OF COMPETENCY:
Master Mariner;
Master, Near Coastal;
Master 3,000 Gross Tonnage, Near Coastal;
Master 3,000 Gross Tonnage, Domestic;
Master 500 Gross Tonnage, Domestic;
Master 150 Gross Tonnage, Domestic;
Master, Limited for a Vessel of 60 Gross Tonnage or More;
Chief Mate, Limited for a Vessel of 60 Gross Tonnage or More;
Fishing Master, First Class;
Fishing Master, Second Class.
Prerequisites: The student must be at least 16-years of age to enroll in this course.
