Marine Advanced First Aid

Marine Advanced First Aid is Required by Every Seafarer who, in the event of an accident or illness on board a vessel, is designated to apply Immediate Advanced First Aid Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities described in the Marine Advanced First Aid Subjects listed below. For Example:
  1. Any person who wants to obtain a Master's or Officer's Certificate or Endorsement; and
  2. The person designated to provide First Aid on board a vessel engaged on a Near Coastal Voyage, Class 1 or Unlimited Voyage.

The Marine Advanced First Aid Course is of 31-hours duration comprised of the following subjects:

  1. Immediate action;
  2. First Aid Kit;
  3. Body Structure and Functions;
  4. Toxicological Hazards aboard ship;
  5. Examination of Patient;
  6. Spinal Injuries;
  7. Burns, Scalds and Effects of Heat and Cold;
  8. Fractures, Dislocation and Muscular Injuries;
  9. Medical Care of Rescued Persons, including Distress, Hypothermia and Cold Exposure ;
  10. Radio medical Advice
  11. Pharmacology;
  12. Sterilization;
  13. Cardiac Arrest, Asphyxia and Drowning;
  14. Psychological and Psychiatric Problems.

The Western Maritime Institute's Marine Advanced First Aid Courses are contracted to a Transport Canada approved First Aid provider to deliver the Transport Canada approved Marine Advanced First Aid Course.

Successful Completion of the Marine Advanced First Aid Course requires the Participant to demonstrate competence by the Approved First Aid Instructor Assessment of evidence obtained from Lectures, Tests, Demonstrations and Practical Instruction.

TRANSPORT CANADA REQUIRES THE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THIS COURSE FOR THE FOLLOWING CERTIFICATES OF COMPETENCY:
  1. Master Mariner Certificate Program.
  2. Master, Near Coastal Certificate Program.
  3. Master 3,000 Gross Tonnage, Near Coastal Certificate Program.
  4. Master 3,000 Gross Tonnage, Domestic Certificate Program.
  5. Master 500 Gross Tonnage, Domestic Certificate Program.
  6. Master 150 Gross Tonnage, Domestic Certificate Program.
  7. Chief Mate Certificate Program.
  8. Chief Mate, Near Coastal Certificate Program.
  9. Watchkeeping Mate and Watchkeeping Mate, Near Coastal Certificate Program.
  10. Chief Mate 500 Gross Tonnage, Domestic Certificate Program.
  11. Chief Mate 150 Gross Tonnage, Domestic Certificate Program.
  12. Fishing Master, First Class Certificate Program;
  13. Fishing Master, Second Class Certificate Program;
  14. Fishing Master, Third Class Certificate Program.
  15. Fishing Master, Fourth Class Certificate Program.

Prerequisites: The student must be at least 16-years of age to enroll in this course.
