Simulated Electronic Navigation - Limited

The Simulated Electronic Navigation (SEN), Limited course is of 30 hours duration comprised of:
  1. Classroom Lectures - 14 hours, 90% attendance required;
  2. Practical Exercises - 14 hours, 100% attendance required;
  3. Practical Written and Practical examination - 2 hours, mandatory.

The Western Maritime Institute Simulated Electronic Navigation (SEN), Limited is a Transport Canada Approved Training Course to provide the student with the Knowledge of the Principles, the ability to use and the skill required for the Proper Operation of typical Navigation Electronic Equipment found on board a Coastal Vessel.

Successful completion of the Electronic Navigation Course shall be determined by the Transport Canada Approved Instructor conducting the course. To demonstrate their abilities and as part of the evaluation process, participants must successfully complete:

  1. A Fifty Question Multiple-Choice Examination; and
  2. An Exercise utilizing the Navigation Simulator. The Practical Exercise will include Course Planning and updating Vessel Position on Navigational Charts using GPS or LORAN-C for positional information, Radar and Depth Sounder will be used to verify position information from GPS or LORAN-C, Radar will be used for detecting targets and Plotting Sheets will be used for determining threatening targets and appropriate actions to be taken in considering International Collision Regulations and Good Seamanship.

Fifty percent of the Final Mark will be based on the Multiple-Choice Questions and the remaining 50% of the Final Mark will be based on the Practical Examination. Any Collisions, Groundings, or similar Distress Situations during the Practical Examination will be marked as a “Fail” for the person operating the vessel involved. A Final Mark of 70% or more on each part is required for a “Pass”.

The Course will provide the application of Competent Electronic Navigation practices utilizing:

  1. Radar;
  2. Loran C;
  3. GPS;
  4. Marine Compasses;
  5. Sounder;
  6. Electronic Charting Systems;
  7. Situation Awareness.

A Transport Canada Training Certificate will be issued by The Western Maritime Institute to the participant who:

  1. Has been assigned a Candidate Document Number (CDN) by Transport Canada
  2. Maintains a minimum of 90% attendance; and
  3. Achieves a passing grade as outlined above.

TRANSPORT CANADA REQUIRES THE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THIS COURSE FOR THE FOLLOWING CERTIFICATES OF COMPETENCY:
  1. Master 150 Gross Tonnage, Domestic Certificate Program;
  2. Master, Limited Certificate for a Vessel of 60 Gross Tonnage or More Program;
  3. Chief Mate 150 Gross Tonnage, Domestic Certificate Program;
  4. Chief Mate, Limited Certificate for a Vessel of 60 Gross Tonnage or More Program;
  5. Fishing Master, Third Class Certificate Program;
  6. Fishing Master, Fourth Class Certificate Program;
  7. Certificate of Service as Master of a Fishing Vessel of Less Than 60 Gross Tonnage Program.
  8. Watchkeeping Mate on a Fishing Vessel not more than 150 Gross Tonnage Certificate Program.

Prerequisites: The student must be at least 16-years of age to enroll in this course.
