The Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) course is of 30 hours duration comprised of lectures, demonstrations and exercises to train the mariner in the safe operation of Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) and Electronic Chart Systems on-board vessels equipped with such systems.
The Western Maritime Institute Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) is a Transport Canada Approved Training Course providing study and practice in:
ECDIS Definitions, Concepts and Related Authorities;
Legal Aspects and Requirements;
Chart Display Systems;
ECDIS Data;
Sensors and Interfaces;
Chart Updating;
Errors of Displayed Data;
Errors of Interpretation;
Risk of Over-Reliance;
Back-up Arrangements;
Presentation of ECDIS Data;
System Status Alarms and Indications;
Basic Navigational Functions and Settings
Route Planning and Monitoring Specific Functions;
Display and function of other navigational information
Documentation;
Integrity Monitoring;
A Transport Canada Training Certificate will be issued by The Western Maritime Institute to the participant who is able to demonstrate proficiency in:
Basic principles of ECDIS data, sensors, presentation of Electronic Navigation Chart (ENC);
Operation of ECDIS and associated functions for passage planning and monitoring, including display options, ENC identification, alarms, chart updating and other navigational functions; and
Appreciation of the limitations of ECDIS and ENC data, and awareness of the legal aspects and responsibilities associated with the use of ECDIS as an aid to navigation.
TRANSPORT CANADA REQUIRES THE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THIS COURSE FOR THE FOLLOWING CERTIFICATES OF COMPETENCY:
Operators of Vessels equipped with an Electronic Chart Computer Navigation System but not required to hold an Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) Transport Canada Training Certificate will benefit from the highly practical nature of this course.
Prerequisites: The student must be at least 16-years of age to enroll in this course.
