Chartwork and Pilotage, Level 1

The Western Maritime Institute Chartwork and Pilotage, Level 1 Course prepares the participant to sit a Scheduled Examination conducted by Transport Canada.

The Chartwork and Pilotage, Level 1 examination consists of a Practical Chartwork Paper and Multiple-Choice questions; of Unlimited Duration; and is based upon:

  1. Knowledge of Principles of Construction of the different types of Charts and their use;
  2. Thorough Knowledge of and Ability to use Publications;
  3. Ability to Determine the Ship’s Position by use of:
    1. Landmarks;
    2. Aids to Navigation, including Lighthouses, Beacons and Buoys;
    3. Dead Reckoning, taking into account Winds, Tides, Currents and Estimated Speed;
  4. Keeping a Log Book and a record of Compass Errors;
TRANSPORT CANADA REQUIRES THE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THIS COURSE FOR THE FOLLOWING CERTIFICATES OF COMPETENCY:
  1. Chief Mate 150 Gross Tonnage, Domestic Certificate Program;
  2. Fishing Master, Fourth Class Certificate Program.
  3. Watchkeeping Mate on a Fishing Vessel not more than 150 Gross Tonnage Certificate Program.

Prerequisites: The student must be at least 16-years of age to enroll in this course.
