Ship Construction and Stability, Level 3

The Western Maritime Institute Ship Construction and Stability, Level 3 Course prepares the participant to sit a Scheduled Examination conducted by Transport Canada.

The Ship Construction and Stability, Level 3 Examination consists of multiple-choice questions and Practical Calculations based on a vessel's stability data booklet.

The Examination is of Three Hours Duration and is based upon:

  1. Understanding Stability Basic Terminology;
  2. Understanding Transverse Stability Principles;
  3. Practical use of Stability Data supplied to Typical Vessel's and Tugs;
  4. Transverse Stability and Trim Calculations;
  5. Effect of Environmental Conditions on Vessel Stability;
  6. Knowledge of the Canadian Loadline Regulations;
  7. Understanding Basic Construction Terminology;
  8. Maintain Integrity of the Hull and Superstructures and Prevent Water Flooding;
  9. Survivablity of the Vessel in case of Flooding and Damage Control;
  10. Protection against Fires;
  11. Vessel Inspection and Maintenance.
TRANSPORT CANADA REQUIRES THE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THIS COURSE FOR THE FOLLOWING CERTIFICATES OF COMPETENCY:
  1. Master 500 Gross Tonnage, Near Coastal Certificate Program;
  2. Master 500 Gross Tonnage, Domestic Certificate Program;
  3. Master 150 Gross Tonnage, Domestic Certificate Program;
  4. Watchkeeping Mate and Watchkeeping Mate, Near Coastal Certificate Program;
  5. Chief Mate 500 Gross Tonnage, Domestic Certificate Program;
  6. Fishing Master, Third Class Certificate Program.

Prerequisites: The student must be at least 16-years of age to enroll in this course.
