Business Administration and Bookkeeping with optional Practicum

Program Description

The Business Administration and Bookkeeping Diploma program provides students with a thorough understanding of bookkeeping techniques and practices, and their application in both manual and computerized environments. The program teaches students the essential bookkeeping skills needed within the workplace such as reconciling bank transactions, handling petty cash, and the basics of double-entry systems. This program also teaches students the most popular accounting programs including Sage50 and QuickBooks. Basic payroll concepts and introduction level of personal income taxes are also covered. The program is suitable for students with no prior bookkeeping experience, and also for those who are currently working in a bookkeeping role and are looking for further professional development.

Optional Four Week Practicum

Adding an additional four-week practicum is a very important addition to this program and will provide the students an opportunity to develop and practice the knowledge and skills learnt through the program.

OAC100: Computer Basics and Keyboarding

Description

This course teaches students the basic computer skills including the major hardware components of a typical office computer system, and the function of a computer operating system. Students will master Windows topics such as the use of the start button, the taskbar, short cut icons, and Windows Explorer. Students will also gain a foundation of knowledge about the Internet, internet browsers, service providers, e-mail, and transfer protocol. Students will also improve their keyboarding speed and technique.

OAC110: Word Processing I

Description

This course introduces students to the software functions of Microsoft Word. Students will learn properly format documents such as letters and memoranda through Microsoft Word. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to create and manage documents; generate and modify tables and lists; as well as insert graphics.

OAC120: Microsoft Excel

Description

This course introduces students to identity spreadsheet terminology and concept. Students will get to learn about the basic feature on Microsoft Excel. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to create formulas and functions, use formatting features, and generate charts, graphs, and reports through Microsoft Excel.

OAC130: Business Communications

Description

This course teaches students how to compose business correspondence including letters, reports, memoranda, and emails. In addition, students will practice business writing skills, applying the mechanics of style, developing proofreading and editing skills, and using words effectively. They will apply effective verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to a variety of business situations. Students will also practice the career and interpersonal skills necessary for success in the workplace, such as conflict resolution and business etiquette.

OAC140: Administration Procedures

Description

This course is designed to enhance the students’ organizational and critical thinking skills. Students will gain knowledge and practical experience on topics such as time management strategies, office communication, and techniques for maintaining an office’s professional image. They will also learn how to make travel arrangements for business, and how to prepare meeting minutes, conference notes, and official reports.

OAC150: Human Relations and Customer Service

Description

This course teaches the fundamentals of human relations and customer service. Students will be able to develop strong customer service skills by learning time management techniques; how to manage stress; and how to communicate effectively through the whole course.

RIM100: Records and Information Management (RIM)

Description

This course introduces students to record and information management, including physical record management, electronic record management, and classification (using metadata, taxonomies, and file plans), and the administration of Record Information Management (RIM) programs. Students will learn a systematic approach to managing a record’s lifecycle, including creating, identifying, classifying, storing, securing, retrieving, tracking, and disposing of or permanently preserving a record. Students will also use Microsoft Access to learn how to organize data files, enter, sort, filter data in a database, and create simple reports summarizing information from database tables or queries.

ACC100: Bookkeeping

Description

This course introduces students the basics of the bookkeeping double-entry system and accounting tools. This course is the first in a series of courses to build a solid base in accounting from both practical and theoretical perspectives. Students will learn the construction and interpretation of financial systems, records, reports, and statements, including how vital accurate and complete financial data is for a business to ensure its ongoing success. The bookkeeping cycle, involving journals and ledgers to the preparation of financial statements, is covered in this course as well.

ACC110: Financial Accounting

Description

This course concentrates on the recording process and the production of financial statements. All topics in this course are presented in small, manageable segments, using clear language and visuals, which is perfect for non-accounting majors. The course introduces simple tools to students, which allows them to analyze financial information and explain the information contained in the financial statements in their future roles as managers, investors, or other users of financial accounting information.

ACC120: Personal Income Taxes and Software

Description

This course provides students with an introduction to income taxes and the preparation of individual tax returns using computer software. Students will learn how to prepare basic personal income tax returns, income tax statements for proprietorships and partnership. By using the computer programming in this course, students will be able to report income for their personal tax refund and complete detailed schedules.

ACC130: Payroll Administration

Description

This course provides an overview of the requirements for processing payroll calculations and administering the payments to employees, government agencies, and other parties in compliance with laws, regulations, and contractual arrangements. Students will learn how to prepare hourly, salaried, and commission payroll. They will also learn payroll law, record maintenance, paycheck and statement preparation, and T4 preparation. They will gain a better understanding of how current source deduction rules affect payroll preparation. WCB, Revenue Canada Taxation, Records of Employment, and Stats Canada reporting. Employment Standards are also covered in this course.

Description

Sage 50 (formerly Simply Accounting) is one of the industry’s most well-recognized accounting programs. In this course, students will learn how to use various Sage 50 modules and features to prepare a set of financial records. Description

Description

This course provides a comprehensive overview of the strategic job search process. Students will be able to clarify their career goals, write the resume and cover letter; develop interview skills, gain job search techniques, and show their strength and professionalism to the prospective employers by end of the course.
