This course introduces students who have little to no marine experience to all aspects of the mariner’s trade from vessel steering to signaling and flag communications. Students will learn how to work with various chain fiber and wire ropes (knots and splices); how to perform ship maintenance and assist with cargo handling procedures.

This course provides students with in-depth knowledge and application of stability, trim and stress tables, diagrams and stress calculating equipment with the aim of maintaining the seaworthiness of a vessel. Students also gain an understanding of actions needed to prevent and deal with the loss of intact buoyancy.

This Simulated Electronic Navigation – Operational level course is designed to provide the student thorough knowledge of the application of the Collision Regulations and principles to be observed in keeping a navigational watch in a simulated environment while using electronic aids to plot the ship’s position and progress, and in a one-on-one ship situation to take necessary action to avoid collision without putting vessel at risk.

This course provides student with sufficient knowledge to make appropriate decisions in complex navigational situations including navigation emergency situations. To effectively plan, organize and manage a bridge team, to comply with the standards regarding watchkeeping and to handle the maneuver of a large vessel in confined water in a simulated environment. Also, the student will be able to effectively coordinate a search and rescue operation. At the end of the training, the student will prepare and execute a voyage plan from berth to berth using the necessary instruments and publications while assuming the duties and responsibilities of the master aboard ships having specified maneuvering characteristics.

The SVOP provides basic theoretic knowledge to those with specified practical skills and experience in small commercial power-driven vessels less than 5 gross tonnage or fishing vessels less than 15 gross tonnage. Part A is designed for seafarers who are newly involved with the supervision of oil transfers within the marine industry. This certificate is valid for 30 months, during which time the student is required to acquire three months of operational and supervised industry experience (Part B) in preparation of Part C of the certification.
